In the last couple it has come to light that Limited License Social Workers must now complete the 4000 work requirement before they can take the required licensure exam. Previously, folks were allowed to take the exam any time after being issued their limited license. Many limited license social workers (LLMSW’S) are really upset with the rule change, especially those who were planning to take the exam soon and those who recently paid for and completed an exam prep course. Many are also upset about the lack of announcement from the state on the change.
I have to admit I’m on the fence. I think it is a real bummer for those folks who were gearing up for the exam and now have to wait (up to two years) to take it. I also agree with many that more notice should have been given. However this rule change happened at ASWB more than 2 years ago, and Michigan was one of only a handful of states that were out of compliance. And, more importantly, shouldn’t people with two years of practice experience be better prepared to pass the exam? Does the exam actually test practice ability? If not, what is the real purpose of the exam?
